14 Now measure the seat for fabric cutting: you will need a circular piece for the seat top, a border piece measured to the circumference of the seat and wide enough to be attached to the seat’s underside, and single piping for the top edge (full circumference) and bottom edge (part circumference to inside back).

15 Make pieces of single piping: one piece to fit the circumference of the seat at the top edge and one piece for the bottom edge, ending at the inside back (see Techniques: Single and Double Piping).

16 Take your piece of border fabric and sew the short ends together. Sew the long piping length to the top edge of the border using the piping foot. Next pin the circular top piece into the border with wrong sides facing and sew all the way around.

17 Cover the seat with another layer of polyester wadding, tearing off any excess from the underside. Slip the cover over the seat and attach it to the underside (plywood base) using 6mm (1⁄4in) staples.

18 Now to add the remaining piece of piping to the underside of the seat. Place the seat upside down on the chair and chalk on the underside the points where the seat hits the inside back of the chair. Staple the piping from chalk mark to chalk mark. When you get to the end, cut away any excess piping cord, tuck in the ends of the fabric and staple in place (G).
